In 2021, I joined the Rotterdam Student Rugby Club. While this evoked my love for rugby, it was also a place where my photography massively improved. I would often, when I wasn’t playing, be on the sidelines photographing the matches.
A significant tradition for the rugby club was to participate in No-Shave November and raise money for the Movember Foundation. The Movember Foundation raises money and awareness for men’s mental and physical health. Every year, the club members would grow out their mustaches to try to raise as much money as possible for the Movember Foundation. To me, this is an issue that is not talked about enough. Men are not used to talking about their mental or physical health and rather keep it to themselves until it is too late. For me, it is important to open this conversation up, and this initiative is a great way to do this.
One problem, however…, despite big efforts, I cannot grow a moustache for the life of me. Multiple attempts have been made, but it has never gotten further than a few lost hairs around my upper lip.
Luckily, I have other skills, and that is where my love for photography came in handy. Before I joined the club, they made a naked calendar to raise money and awareness. When I heard this, I thought it would be great to revive this initiative. Since then, we have made three editions of this calendar, and I have had the pleasure of photographing two of them. This page is dedicated to showing my work from those shoots and to keep raising awareness for the issue that these pictures address.
